NCWN Spring Conference, April 18, 2020

Fellowship. Learning. Support.

These principles are at the heart of the Carolina African-American Writers' Collective, and they happen to be central tenets of the North Carolina Writers’ Network as well.

NCWN, which turns thirty-five this year, will host its 2020 Spring Conference on Saturday, April 18, at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The Keynote Celebration will feature four CAAWC writers—founder Lenard D. Moore; Dr. L. Teresa Church; Bridgette A. Lacy; and Crystal Simone Smith—as they chronicle the history of the organization and read passages from All the Songs We Sing: Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Carolina African-American Writers' Collective (Blair, 2020).

Poetry: Poetry Master Class, “Now Look at What You Have Done,” with Stuart Dischell;  “More than Meaning” with Timothy O’Keefe;  “Crowded House: Imagery in Poetry” with Jennie Malboeuf

Fiction: FictionMaster Class, “Messing Up Good.” with Xhenet Aliu:  “Make a Scene.” with Quinn Dalton

CNF: Creative Nonfiction Master Class, “Our Memories and Our Words: The Art of Writing Memoir.” with Randal O’Wain;  “Narrative Medicine” with Aimee Mepham, “Writing Your Life: Turning Personal Stories into Universal Narratives” with Bridgette A. Lacy,

Publishing: “Public Speaking for Writers” with Cameron Kent;  “From Manuscript to Finished Book” with Blair editors Robin Miura and Lynn York.

Misc:  “Planning Your Creativity: Hybrid Outlines for 21st Century Writing” with Jorge Cortese.

In addition, guaranteed to help attendees build the intestinal fortitude necessary to weather the furious storms of publishing, NCWN will host its sixth “Slush Pile Live!”

Familiar features remain, including faculty readings, an open mic for conference participants, an exhibit hall packed with publishers and literary organizations, and “Lunch with an Author,” and, the sixth annual “Slush Pile Live!”

Spring Conference is sponsored in part by UNCG’s Creative Writing Program, which will provide coffee for conference-goers during registration and check-in. Other sponsors include the North Carolina Arts Council.

Writers' Morning Out September 14, 2013

Pittsboro Writers’ Morning Out will meet Saturday, September 14, 1:00 PM at Pittsboro Roadhouse.  We will be in the back room. Come early if you are having lunch there.

All writers, any genre are invited.

Writing Assignment:  Last month members read their thought on Why They Write.  These proved to be most interesting and thoughtful. So we will continue.  The subject this month is “How I Write”, the where and when. Again please keep it short (1 page or less) so we can hear from everyone.

The North Carolina Writers' Network Spring Conference is Saturday, April 28 at the Elliott University Center at University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Keynote speaker is best-selling children's author Carole Boston Weatherford.
Conference participants may select from a variety of half- and full-day
workshops, including "Writing For Your Life," a creative nonfiction workshop
with author Marianne Gingher; "Packaging Yourself as a Writer," with Press 53
publisher Kevin Morgan Watson; "The Worst Things Ever" with poet and UNC School of the Arts professor Joseph Mills; and Weatherford's "Think Anyone Can Write a Children's Book?" workshop.

Other instructors include David Halperin and Tracy O Connor on fiction, Anjail Rashida Ahmad on poetry, Edmund R. Schubert on science fiction and fantasy, Paul Cuadros on nonfiction, and Angela Harwood on marketing for authors.

2010 NCWN Fall Conference

This November, the North Carolina Writers’ Network will hold its 25th annual Fall Conference We could not have reached this milestone without you, and we want you to celebrate it with us.

The 2010 Fall Conference will be November 5–7 at the Omni Charlotte Hotel, located in the heart of our state’s largest city. This year’s conference will include more than two dozen workshops, Master Classes, and panel discussions; Manuscript Mart and Critique Service with top agents and editors; a keynote presentation by North Carolina novelist Michael Malone; a literary tour of Uptown Charlotte with Georgann Eubanks, author of the new book Literary Trails of the North Carolina Piedmont; a reading and talk by NC Poet Laureate
Cathy Smith Bowers; faculty readings; exhibits by publishers, literary magazines, and other friends of writers; and new opportunities for you to re-energize yourself and get your writing exposed. We are anticipating one of our best conferences ever.

We will again offer our popular Manuscript Mart, an opportunity for you to discuss your manuscript with an agent or editor who is seeking new writers.
These agents and editors are experienced publishing professionals who can help you find the right niche for your manuscript. They include Daniel Lazar of Writers’ House; Quinlan Lee of Adams Literary; Sally McMillan of Sally
Hill McMillan & Associates; and Kevin Watson of Press 53.

If your work is not quite ready for publication, and you would like a seasoned writer to take a critical look at it, sign up for the Critique Service.
