Poetry workshops at CCCC 

Thomas Dow, noted Chatham County poet, will be teaching two workshops in Japanese poetry forms.

  1. Haiku & Sumi-e:  A look at the form and composition of haiku and with an introduction to sumi-e ( Japanese brush writing-painting) with a hands on chance to learn techniques as used in writing haiku in Japanese.  Saturday March 12, 11am to 5pm.

2.  Haiku & Tea Ceremony:  Again, a look at form and composition of haiku and the connection to tea ceremony;  We will do a brief tea ceremony followed by a quiet writing time after which participants' work may be shared.  Saturday April 16, 11am to 5pm.

Open Mic Workshop

Open Mic? Yikes! Reading Your Work in Public • Course #1269

If you take the stage with sweaty palms and shaking knees, and then read too fast or mumble, this workshop can help you! We’ll look at clips of established writers reading their work and discuss what they do and why it works. Then we’ll cover preparing, pacing, inflection, interpretation and gaining confidence and the realities of the actual reading.

Finally we’ll practice. Please bring a page of prose or poetry that you love by someone else to read first, as well as a page or poem of your own.

Fiction/Memoir Writing, 2014

Winter 2013 Fiction/Memoir Writing

Mondays, January 13-March 17, 2014. 7-9 PM. Ten Weeks. Moncure. $150, or $180 by correspondence to cover postage and copying costs.

Judy Hogan will offer a second fiction or memoir course this winter for writers at every stage of their writing career. We will read as a model Louise Penny’s Still Life. This book, plus best-selling mystery author Elizabeth George’s book, Write Away, will serve as guide for studying fiction techniques: characterization, scenes, plot, setting, dialogue, viewpoint, getting started. The same techniques help write better memoirs.
Hogan herself, author of mysteries Killer Frost and Farm Fresh and Fatal, finds Write Away helpful and believes the best way to learn to write is to read excellent models/books.

Techniques and examples from both books will be discussed each week, and writers may read to the class as well as turn in work to Hogan.

Creative Writing Workshop: Poetic Form and Song

Poets and songwriters will explore traditional poetic forms used in contemporary music and modern poetry. In this workshop, students will examine songs with lyrics as well as instrumentals influenced by a variety of poetic structures, rhyme schemes, or traditional forms. Each student will choose a form to draft a poem or lyrics. Acoustic string instruments are welcome. Instructor: Chris Bouton.
